Trauma EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)1 is a comprehensive, integrative psychotherapy approach that includes psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies. Relationship and Marriage Counseling

Life is complicated. It is hard to create and maintain healthy relationships with those we love the most. There are many different thoughts and feelings, from the past and present, that exist in all of our interactions with one another.

It isn’t always simple, whether we are trying to effectively communicate feelings, establish rules for the household, navigate the waters of intimacy, guide our children toward a successful future or simply attempting to provide a healthy meal while working, studying, and cleaning. The world and our family lives are increasingly more complex. Though we all have the tools within ourselves and within our relationships to create thelives we want.

Through our psychotherapy approaches whether parenting coaching, couples or family therapy, we will help you identify the resilience necessary to get you through and develop the skills needed to create the life you and your family desire and deserve. Our practice blends Gottman Method, Attachment/Emotionally Focused Methods, and Harville Hendrix methods to attend to Couples Work. Many of our providers are Gottman trained.

Relationships Therapy, Marriage Counseling

We can help you create and sustain a close, honest and mutually satisfying relationship you deserve. Whether you are struggling with profoundly serious relational patterns, sexual challenges, communication problems, or just a few bumps in your road, our method of couples counseling can move you from pain, silence or anger to passion, restoration and love. There is no problem too difficult, too deep, or too ingrained that cannot benefit from counseling.

Communication Therapy

All couples create negative patterns of communication that they wish were different. We get more frustrated with our partners than we want. We can help you address your issues in a safe environment in order to open communications, be heard by your partner and learn how to ask for and get what you need. We treat both partners with equal respect regardless of gender, marital stature, or  offending behaviors. This therapy is specifically designed to open the channels of communication in order to create balance between the partners

Sexual Fulfillment Therapy

Does your relationship not satisfy you sexually? Do you feel you can address this with your partner comfortably? We are experts in assisting couples to find sexual fulfillment and overcome barriers that might keep you separate. We will provide a respectful, safe, and professional environment to explore your intimate difficulties.

Couples Struggling

Are you hanging on by a thread, trying to make it in the marriage just until the kids turn 18? Are you afraid or unprepared to leave, but can’t imagine staying? Do you ask yourself, “Is this all there is?” but don’t know how to make it better? Let us help. There is no problem too serious to work with.

Gay & Lesbian Couples

Same-sex relationships are challenged by a unique set of issues, created by our world, vulnerabilities, and strengths. We can help in working with LGBTQ couples to heal wounds, empower change, open communications and restore sex and love.

Healing Childhood Wounds in Relationships

We all come with a history into the present relationship. When the wounds of your past wreaks havoc on your current relationship, we can help identify and heal unresolved issues so that your future is not defined by your past.

Child & Family Therapy

We encourage families to meet together, even if one of the children is the identified client. Every member is impacted by each and every member. It is our experience that for the most effective change to take place, the entire family needs to be part of the journey and the plan for change. Change happens faster and last longer when we have the support and knowledge of one another.

Assessments

We will help you assess the strengths and vulnerabilities of each individual member of your family and provide recommendations for the most effective course for service you or your child are needing.

Parent Education

Whether in family, couple or individual sessions we will provide you with many opportunities to learn about your parenting style and design structures that will work in your home.

Parent Coaching

We will ask the right questions to help you discover the best ideas for supporting your child’s growth and development

Individual Child Therapy

Because we know that children often need their own person to play with, process with, and confide in, we provide creative individual therapy with children while regularly including the parents. It is important to keep the parents involved with their child’s change.

What is Theraplay?

Theraplay is a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of playful, healthy interaction between parent and child and is personal, physical, and fun. Theraplay interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge. Theraplay sessions create an active, emotional connection between the child and parent or caregiver, resulting in a changed view of the self as worthy and lovable and of relationships as positive and rewarding.

In treatment, the Theraplay Practitioner guides the parent and child through playful, fun games, developmentally challenging activities, and tender, nurturing activities. The very act of engaging each other in this way helps the parent regulate the child’s behavior and communicate love, joy, and safety to the child. It helps the child feel secure, cared for, connected and worthy.

Why Play?

Play is as important to human happiness and well-being as love and work. Play is a fun, enjoyable activity that elevates our spirits and brightens our outlook on life. It expands self-expression, self-knowledge, self-actualization and self-efficacy. Play relieves feelings of stress and boredom, connects us to people in a positive way, stimulates creative thinking and exploration, regulates our emotions, and boosts our ego

Why Play in Therapy?

Play therapy is a structured, theoretically based approach to therapy that builds on the normal communicative and learning processes of children. Therapists strategically utilize play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings. Play therapy may also be used to promote cognitive development and provide insight about and resolution of inner conflicts or dysfunctional thinking in the child.

Trauma & Post-Trauma Counseling

Our therapists guide the individual and family down the path of healing and recovery. If you are experiencing personal loss, or the effects of a current or past traumatic event (j.e. sexual abuse, domestic violence, natural disaster, community violence), we’ll help you face the initial shock and crisis, help you to process, and support you in getting your life back in balance.

Who Benefits from Play Therapy?

Although everyone benefits, play therapy is especially appropriate for children ages 3 through 12 years old (Carmichael, 2006; Gil, 1991; Landreth; 2002; Schaefer, 1993). Teenagers and adults have also benefited from play techniques and recreational processes. To that end, use of play therapy with adults within mental health, agency, and other healthcare contexts is increasing (Pedro-Carroll & Reddy, 2005; Schaefer, 2003). In recent years, play therapy interventions have also been applied to infants and toddlers (Schaefer, et. al., 2008).
In Play Therapy children become more responsible for behaviors and develop more successful strategies.

  • Develop new and creative solutions to problems.
  • Develop respect and acceptance of self and others.
  • Learn to experience and express emotion.
  • Cultivate empathy and respect for thoughts and feelings of others.
  • Learn new social skills and relational skills with family.
  • Develop self-efficacy and thus a better assuredness about their abilities.

How Can My Family Be Involved in Play Therapy?

Families play an important role in children’s healing processes. The interaction between children’s problems and their families is always complex. Sometimes children develop problems as a way of signaling that there is something wrong in the family. Other times the entire family becomes distressed because the child’s problems are so disruptive. In all cases, children and families heal faster when they work together.

The play therapist will make some decisions about how and when to involve some or all members of the family in the play therapy. At a minimum, the therapist will want to communicate regularly with the child’s caretakers to develop a plan for resolving problems as they are identified and to monitor the progress of the treatment. Other options might include involving a) the parents or caretakers directly in the treatment by modifying how they interact with the child at home and b) the whole family in family play therapy (Guerney, 2000). Whatever the level of involvement of the family members, they typically play an important role in the child’s healing (Carey & Schaefer, 1994; Gil & Drewes, 2004).

Consultation Services

As mental health providers we are often brought in to consult on various subjects that have a psychological component.

Integrated Care Consultation

Our Founder has provided consultation on Integrating Behavioral Health and Medical care over the last 16 years. She has assessed patient wait times in clinic and behavioral health settings, as well as, patient improvement rates and employee satisfaction rates.

Employee Satisfaction

Given the large rate of dissatisfied and underperforming employees there is a need to do a thorough evaluation or assessment of what brings about that dissatisfaction. We have assisted hospital and clinic systems in evaluating and training their employees and administration on ways to improve performance by changing the systems and increasing good communication.

Preschool and Head Start Consultation

Many companies are faced with needing to ensure that their programs live up to the high standards set forth in their industry to be competitive with other service providers. Preschools and Head Start programs are no different. Given our expertise in serving the 3-5 year old we are well versed in assessing classroom settings and their students/teachers to ensure that all tools are being used and identified to ensure solid standards are being achieved and integrated.
